End of the Year Burnout Prevention Plan

burnoutHello, December! Time flies when you’re busy running your business, managing your team, and tackling the to-do lists!

You worked hard all year, your clients and customers are happy, you set your sights on big goals and you hit them!

….And you’re tired. It takes a huge amount of energy, creativity, problem solving, and countless hours of networking, planning and implementing to run your successful business. It can be draining, exhausting, and often leads you down the unhappy road to burnout city. Unfortunately, most of us have been there, once, or twice.

December provides us with a great opportunity to personally re-energize, and to create a plan to steer clear of stretching too thin in the New Year.

Here is our End of the Year Burnout Prevention Plan

Acknowledge your Successes

Take some time to look at your numbers. Did you hit your revenue goals? How much did your social media grow over the year? Make a list of what went really well throughout the year; the goals reached; the special wins (big and small). Reflect on what you personally contributed to the overall success.

If you have a team, be sure to share these with them and acknowledge each person for their part.

Schedule Time Off

Now this sounds very obvious, but if you are anything like me, your work brain is always on. How many vacations have you been on where you worked some/most/all of the time?

Take a vacation that is actually a vacation. Do something you have always wanted to do. Spend quality time with yourself, your family or your friends. Your business will be fine without you for week or two.

While you are at it, why don’t you go ahead and block out a week in the spring for your next vacation, too.

Ramp Up the Self Care

Your business won’t thrive if you are run down, lack energy, constantly get sick, feel overwhelmed and unmotivated. You must make time to take care of your mental health by doing things that you love.

Schedule a massage, plan a hike with friends, go to a concert, go out to a nice dinner.  Think about what would feel fun and nourishing, pick a time and date, put it in the calendar. (I’m serious. You have to prioritize self care just like you would a meeting with a client or a dentist appointment).

Consider getting yourself on a regular schedule of these types of things so you are continuously filling up your cup (i.e. monthly massage, Thursday night bike rides, First Friday poker night, etc)

Make A Plan & Get Supported

Create some time to make a plan for your 2017 goals and how you are going to get there. Look at what has been working, and generate new ideas to make your business even better, even more profitable.

It’s also important to take an honest look at what you need support with. For example, if you hate writing blogs, or waste a lot of time fiddling with Facebook ads, then it’s time to hire someone to help you with those things, so you can focus on what you are really good at.

Fingerprint Marketing has an incredible team of people who can help you not only create a marketing strategy, but help you implement it, too. From business basics, to email marketing, SEO to making sure your website is beautiful and  working for you, we are available to make sure that you reach your goals. Click here to schedule a complimentary consultation.

Five Business Communication Breakdowns

In this Facebook Live video, I cover some of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to communication breakdown. It may be time to evaluate how well your team communicates internally and the way communication is handled between you and your clients. There are many ways in which communication fails, it could be…

  • someone doesn’t respond to your email
  • someone leaves an “urgent, call back” message with no explanation
  • someone only answers half your questions in an email

Watch below and stay tuned for more of Pia’s Pet Peeves, Wednesdays @ 10a.m. PST on our Facebook page. Comment below with your negative or positive experiences with client or team communication.

Is Your 24/7 Salesperson Working Part-Time?

Imagine you’re shopping and you find a storefront that’s really attractive…

But the door’s locked and you can’t get in.

Or there’s a salesperson helping you, but they’re really rude and don’t get you at all.

You’d be pretty turned off, #amiright?

In the online world, whether you’re selling a product or a service, your website is your storefront. It takes just 8 seconds to capture people’s attention – which means your website has to be visually stunning and speak directly to how you can help your customers.

How Vulnerability Built My Business

I went with my son to his college in Bellevue this week to run through all the administrative garbage that goes along with being a Freshman (this is our first college freshman in the family). He was like a deer in headlights. Of course, mom (that’s me) didn’t help. Here’s how it went down…

Conversation with my Son

Me: “Did you print out your class schedule?”

Loui: “I can’t get into my account online.”Pia Larson with son

Me: “Did you call or email tech?”

Silence…

Me: “You got your parking permit, right?”

Loui: “Do I need one?”

Facepalm

Me: “Where are you on the waitlist for your writing class? Do you have a backup class?”

Loui: “I have no idea.”

Queue the long dissertation from mom about how you always need a backup plan when you’re waitlisted so you don’t fall behind

Me: “What books do you need to purchase?”

Loui: “I just figured I’ll buy them on the first day of class.”

Mom having a small heart attack on the sidewalk running through all the ‘what ifs’…what if they run out….what if you can buy them online….what if you can get a free version online….do they even use physical textbooks in college anymore and why is that still a thing?

Me: “Have you met your academic counselor?”

Loui: “Do I need one?”

He wants to be a nurse so you can imagine my panic at not having this all thought out as there are so many tracks to consider

Embrace your Vulnerability

At the end of the day, we got everything straightened out. I can’t tell you how many times I was tempted to jump in and help him along the way. I desperately wanted to impart all my experience and wisdom to him on how to succeed in life. Like being prepared and closing the loop, thinking of backup plans, scheduling reminders, writing things down, etc.

Instead, I took a deep breath and brought myself back to my freshman year when my dad went with me to San Francisco State to stand in lines all day to get the garbage admin stuff taken care of. The small nugget of advice I needed to share with my son at that moment was clear…

“Loui..always remember to embrace your vulnerability. If you don’t know the answers, reach out to people and ask. They may not know the answers but they can find someone who does. It’s not bad to be vulnerable. You’ll find that most humans will go out of their way to help you if you are authentic. You don’t have to know it all. And you will never be 100% prepared.”

He smiled and nodded. He felt he could embrace this nugget of advice from mom.

When I embrace vulnerability in my business, I am always amazed what doors it opens. My business is more successful than I could have ever imagined because at different points in my 10 year journey from starting Fingerprint Marketing, I have paused and asked for help. Or asked how I can do better.

I quit comparing myself to competitors (okay…I still secretly keep one eye on them) and asked my sphere how I could do better. I ask my clients all the time. I ask my potential clients. I ask my coaches. I ask my team. I ask my vendors and my referral partners. I know that pretending that I am the best at everything will not allow me to grow. Allowing the wisdom from others who have been in my shoes will push me to new heights. But ya gotta be willing to be vulnerable, reach out for help and ask “how can I do better?”. Don’t pretend that you always have your shit together (unless you’re on Facebook where it’s one big freaking high school reunion). Your clients and potential clients want to know that you’ve been in the trenches and you are human.

We’ll see how Loui fares in his first year of college. I am confident he’ll figure it out. I’ll do my best not to present all the answers before the questions. I’ll trust that he’ll find his tribe who can provide the answers and help build his confidence.

Oh, and if you haven’t watched this amazing Ted Talk on The Power of Vulnerability, stop what you’re doing right now and check it out. Brene Brown, American scholar, author, and public speaker, sums it up perfectly. It takes courage to be imperfect but once you do, your world will embrace you.

How To Get Effective Reviews From Your Customers

I get asked one question a lot by small-business owners: “There are so many ways to market my business today — where do I even start?”

You’ve probably asked that question yourself, because navigating the complexities of marketing your business in today’s digital world can be overwhelming.

Thankfully, the answer is simple: Before you spend even one marketing dollar on increasing your visibility, you need to have a good reputation. It’s your single greatest asset.

Why? Consider this: Before making an in-store purchase, 97% of consumers do research online, and 92% read reviews. That means almost your entire target market will check your reputation to confirm their buying decision before doing business with you.

And that means you need to protect your reputation at all costs.

A Changing Landscape

This used to be easy: If a customer had an issue, they’d tell you about it directly. Then you had the opportunity to immediately make it right. In short order, you could turn a dissatisfied customer into a happy one.

Today, however, that process has shifted dramatically. Thanks to review websites, people can instantaneously (and anonymously) share their experiences, good and bad, with the world.

Business owners, consequently, are left trying to piece together the puzzle of who that reviewer was, what actually happened and how to address the problem. And the fact that review sites offer no recourse for business owners only adds fuel to the fire.

Is it any wonder that review sites are a polarizing topic? Business owners either have been fortunate to build a good reputation on the sites and love the additional business that comes as a result — or they absolutely hate them.

The Way Forward

There’s a way, though, for every (good) business to start loving these sites instead of fearing them. A way to take back control of the conversation. And I’m going to show you the way.

Before we get there, though, you need to understand that review sites aren’t the problem — they’re merely a tool to help consumers make better buying decisions. The real problem is that you don’t have an effective feedback system for your business.

Among my clients, about 5% of their customers are classified as dissatisfied (meaning they rated their experience between 1-3 stars out of 5). But most businesses hear from only 4% of those customers. Do the math — the average business gets feedback from just 0.2% of customers who are unhappy! That’s a recipe for disaster.

We want to hear from every customer who isn’t satisfied, of course. And we also want to flip that number on its head — making sure that the 95% of customers who are satisfied share their experiences online.

How to get effective feedback from all of your customers

To get the reviews you need to grow your business, you need a feedback system that works. Here’s how, in five steps.

  1. Ask new customers how they heard about you.

This is Marketing 101. Their responses will help you determine where to invest your time and resources. If they chose you because of online reviews or testimonials, you now have an opportunity to express your gratitude for the customers who left those reviews. This also signals to your new customer that providing feedback is valuable, making them more likely to do it themselves.

  1. Check in with customers about their experience — during the experience.

This alone can save you an immense amount of trouble, because it will eliminate surprises and provide you with a chance to correct any missteps mid-stream instead of at the end, when the experience has already soured.

  1. Reach out after the experience, too.

When the service or purchase is complete, have your staff let customers know you will be reaching out. This keeps your customer on the lookout for follow-up, and it also tells them that you, the owner, care about their experience. In turn, that makes them more comfortable referring friends and family to you.

This follow-up doesn’t have to be extensive, either — a simple email template that can be quickly personalized will work just fine. That’s what our system does for our clients, and the response rate averages 50%.

  1. Thank customers who do provide feedback.

They took time out of their day to provide you with valuable insight, so be sure to recognize that effort. This also makes you stand out, because very few businesses do it. At the same time, it gives you the opportunity to ask for an online review if their feedback was positive. (If the feedback was negative, you should respond accordingly.)

  1. Respond to your reviews — good and bad.

Almost every review site allows business owners to publicly respond to reviews, so make it a habit. For negative reviews, you want to address the situation, obviously, but you also want to thank customers for posting positive reviews. Both types of responses show that you’re on top of your customers’ needs.

Virtually every business that puts these five best practices to work will see positive change. So before you worry about marketing, start with your reputation. After all, even good marketing is a waste of money if it’s used to drive potential customers toward a business with a bad reputation. But when your marketing drives people toward your stellar reputation, that makes you the clear choice for them.

Initially, you will get some good feedback and some not-so-good feedback, but don’t worry — that’s precisely what you need in order to grow and improve your reputation and your business.

Because the only thing worse for your business than negative feedback is getting no feedback at all.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear how your business uses feedback. Join the conversation in the comments section below.

Is Your Website Mobile Friendly?

It’s an important question to ask yourself in today’s tech savvy world. If your business hasn’t adapted its site for mobile use, then you are leaving money on the table. People want to find you through their smart phones. According to Google, 72% of consumers are looking for mobile-friendly sites. It is time to check the status of your website and here is why:

Google Cares

Google recently announced that they will be assigning a lower Google mobile ranking to any website that hasn’t integrated a mobile-friendly design. With over 80% of all adults now owning smartphones and the use of mobile increasing rapidly, your site needs to be compatible with mobile devices.

Online Traffic Is Moving To Mobile

mobile-friendly

Stated by the Global Web Index, 75% of Internet users went online via a mobile device at the end of 2015 and this number will continue to rise as mobile takes over desktop use. Likewise, about 56 % of consumer traffic to the top US websites is now from mobile devices according to SimilarWeb’s State of Mobile Web US 2015 report. So if your site is not mobile-friendly, you are leading your potential traffic to your competitors front door.

Mobile Friendly Sites Support Local Business

If your business is local, you want to be found by the people within close proximity of your location. Google reports that 1/3 of mobile searches have local intent and that can either help or hurt your business whether or not you are doing well on mobile. It is also important to factor in that 18% of a local search on smartphones leads to a sale as compared to non-local searches that account for 7 percent*.

Do I Pass?

There are several ways to see if your site is mobile-friendly. Here is what we suggest:

Take the Google Mobile-Friendly Test

This test will look at your page URL and report if the page has a mobile-friendly design. Take the Google Mobile-Friendly Test.

Do A Pulse Check

Ask yourself these questions when reviewing your site on a mobile device:

  • Does it load in less than three seconds?
  • Does it draw attention to your brand’s message?
  • Does it link to your social media profiles?
  • Is the content easy to read?
  • Are the landing page and inside pages easy to navigate?
  • Is it a website you would stay on if it was not your own?

Hire A Web Developer

If your website comes up as not mobile-friendly, you may want to consider hiring a web developer to rebuild your core website to be responsive and mobile-friendly. We will run your website through extensive testing, not just for mobile use but for load speed, readability, conversion and keywords.

Check out our portfolio where you will find websites we designed that are mobile-friendly.

Your customers are increasingly going mobile, so make sure you do too.

6 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Use A Purchased Theme To Build Your Website

This week Goran, our lead developer, will be talking about this trending topic that is circulating the Internet.

Why You Shouldn’t Use A Purchased WordPress Theme

As a previous author of 3,000 themes sold with perfect ratings through ThemeForest, I can attest they work and function well-enough. Regardless of how unique and operative these themes are, there are definite pitfalls to pre-made WordPress themes. These drawbacks are why we don’t maintain sites that use premium themes anymore. A premium WordPress theme is any theme for the WordPress online blogging engine that you have to pay for in order to use.

You may be browsing through popular theme marketplaces such as ThemeForest to find the perfect visual representation for your brand but before you make a decision, think twice. Less than 10% of our clients are using purchased commercial themes and though that figure is small, we spend 80% of our maintenance time on their sites.

As a developer, you are being forced by your competition and audience demand to throw in as many features as possible into your WordPress commercial themes. Eventually, your site is jampacked so it can do everything and anything with all the shiny features now available. What you have is a multipurpose theme.

Multipurpose themes are the top sellers on ThemeForest and nowadays, almost all themes sold through this marketplace are multipurpose. Their goal is to allow customers to build any type of website they need, from dentist to personal to e-commerce solutions. While this may sound ideal, it is anything but. There’s a whole lot of ugly when you draw back the veil and see what’s going on in the back-end. Here are a few ugly truths you’ll find if you use a premium website template.

Slowww Speed

We took over a site from a new client who uses a top selling theme. The site is simple, using just two to three script files to load dynamic content like sliders. Yet what the theme actually loads are 70+ additional scripts which is slowing the website by six seconds. Each second of delay in a page response results in a 7% reduction in conversion. Ouch.

Warning! Error!

With the latest WordPress update, which introduced the new version of jQuery script, almost every theme on ThemeForest had an issue. In all cases, the problem came from having a feature on the theme that most users did not even use. It is very hard to find the root of the problem when errors do occur because so many unneeded files are being loaded into the website that finding the code causing the error requires a lot of effort, time, and skill.

In addition, many themes on the marketplace have low quality code that does not adhere to industry best practices. It negatively affects your site’s SEO, site speed, and makes your site more vulnerable to malware/hacking.

Low Standards

The majority of templates fail to follow the basics of SEO and HTML standards like proper use of H tags, minification of css/javascript, and clean HTML.

Theme Swapping

It is easy to build your website with drag and drop but if you ever want to switch to another theme, beware, your content will be lost or you will need to manually copy it to the new website (which is a pain).

Abandoned Theme

If a theme developer decides he no longer wants to support the purchased theme and ends up abandoning the template, the theme will become old and outdated.

Security Check

When developers combine plugins with themes, it makes the theme more vulnerable to malware. This happened in 2014 when 100,000+ WordPress sites were hit with the SoakSoak.ru malware campaign. This led to more than 11,000 domains being blacklisted by Google.

These marketplaces are affecting WordPress’ credibility so much that when something goes wrong with the website, the end user places the blame on WordPress. In reality, it is due to a poorly coded theme. The issue is becoming so big in the WordPress “ecosystem” that WordPress has officially banned ThemeForest authors from speaking at the WordCamps, which are official WordPress conferences.

Here at Fingerprint Marketing, every website that we build is custom built from scratch. Every site fulfills exactly one role that meets our clients’ every online need. Creating custom sites allows us to design unique sites with full security and speed efficiency that is unique to your business. Instead of having 70+ files that come loaded on purchased themes, we only have two to three scripts optimized just for our clients and their site needs. This reduces maintenance and ultimately, keeps messy issues from popping up over and over again.

Take a peek at our custom designed websites that we built from the ground up.
